WHAT MAKES THE DIFFERENCE?
Report from the working group STEREOTYPES

To insure that we really know the topic that we tackle and the problem that we often face we started with the definition of stereotype. The definition set by the group is that stereotype is statement or carateristic taken from a smaller group within one society and that associated with the entire society. Although they are usually completely false or only part true wide public opinion consider them to be truth.

As the source of stereotype we mentioned several reasons. One of the most important is the fact that people have only partial knowledge of things, no intention to go deeper into the subject but only taking the most obvious caracteristics and than present it like a carateristic of the entire group. For it is much easier way that to actually get to know the group that there are describing. What is also imortant to mention is that in majority of cases we easily accepte bad caracteristics, while good rarely become a stereotypes.

As for the creation and spreading the stereotypes mayority of them have a long “tradition”. In the present they are still strongly visiblein media that with it´s superficial attitude creates new ones, especially trough mass-media. Nevertheless one of the most officiant way to spread the sterotipe is a simple joke. Precisely for the reason that we consider it small and unimportant it spreads quickly trough the society leaving a small trace deep in the mind of people.

Who do we blame for the stereotypes? Do we have to blame someone? How do we fight it? We decided that there is no point in blaming when the best way to fight the stereotype is education that has to start still in childhood. Together with the strong conraarguments, campaigns that encourage public discussions, education is the only way to change the society. Our role is not to stand still and wait for the things to happen by themselves, but to demand it and be actively involved using all means to create a stereotype- free society.
