Queer Easter 2001

Emma

My name is Emma. I`m 19 years old and come from Great Britain (Manchester).
I study architecture. I`m out, at university, mostly at work. I´m a waitress and I work with different people all the time. The ones that I work with a lot know.

I had mostly positive experiences since my coming out. Some people are suprised and don`t know how to react. Some people have been offensive. But most people are supportive. In Britain most of the big cities are tolerant. But there is no legislation against discrimination at work. Section 28 prevents the promotion of the accaptability of homosexuality in schools.

Did you ever had problems?
I`ve been insulted but I haven`t suffered any violence as a result if my sexuality.

I would like to see the repeal of section 28, protection against discrimination at work, legal recognition of same sex partnership and rights for any couples.
I would like to see a change in some peoples attitude to gay and lesbian people.

Last summer on the IFMSEI international camp I find out about Queer Easter when I met people from the SJD - die Falken, the Queerforum.

An my resons to take part was to meet people and make friends. To make links with other organisations in different countries. To learn more about the international situation. To get ideas to take back to my organisation the Woodcraft Folk, Rainbow Network.

It was very expensive to travel at Easter. But we were given funding.

I like it a lot I have met a lot of nice people. It has been very productive.
There has been a lot of interesting discussions. I have learnt a lot.

I hope next year a bigger deligation will come from Britain.
